Halton Borough Council commissioned Gaist Solutions Ltd to calculate the area of each of their UKPMS sections to improve the accuracy of their current estimations of carriageway widths.

Prior to this Halton Borough Council had undertaken a desktop exercise to calculate the average width of their network using Mastermap Topographic layer data and averaging 2-3 sample points on each section reference. This study compares the various methods of calculating carriageway widths, the relative accuracy and the effect on valuation. The study concludes that even using measured widths, individual sections are on average between 10% and 27% inaccurate and the total area up to 4% inaccurate having a significant impact on valuation.

The system was very widely used during the event for planning and preparation of routes, siteing of equipment and assessing potential hazards.  Such is the versatility of the system, it was used as the core incident management system at Race HQ and the Gold Command Centre by West Yorkshire Police, logging over 2000 incidents in 48 hours.   Alex Nancolas,  Command, Control & Communication Manager (C3 Manager) for the UK stages of the race had this to say about Gaist’s technology.

The system is highly innovative and allows Councils to bring a wide range of information together into one system that is very easy to use.”

AssetStream is web based and can be deployed within minutes, with minimal ICT overhead. The same system can be used for any number of tasks including; Surface Water Asset Management, Public Rights of Way, Streetlighting and street furniture etc.
